Garden State

Hi There!

Short little intro:  I am Christina, I live in Monterey, Ca with my husband.  I am an out-of-relevant-work journalist with too much time on my hands.  This is my first year that I've had to live completely on my own, since my family lives across the country.  At first this got me into thinking about ways I could cut down my own costs of living, but it naturally progressed into me thinking of ways that I can live a more self-dependent lifestyle.

My kitchen is slowly transforming into a place where I make my own pasta, juice my own juice, make my own sauces, et cetera; mainly just trying to leave boxed foods behind. Canning is my next goal in the kitchen, and that should take care of the purchasing of.. well.. canned foods. ;)  I do my best to buy my produce locally, but it doesn't always happen that way (one day...).  And it excites me to no end to think that one day I'll own a home, not move for at least a decade, and thus have my own greenhouse.  :)

I'm not so organic outside of the kitchen, at least not at the moment. I think I feel encouraged to commit to more eco-friendly acts as I notice the little things actually making a difference in my mood, health and wallet, which

Happy Earth Day thanks to WF and other environmentally-friendly lovelies!

Thank you Whole Foods for getting rid of your plastic bags, and a special thank you for the lovely insulated, zip-top reusable grocery bag, coupons, magnetic grocery list notepad, and tea you gave me for being one of the first 100 shoppers this morning. Love love love you tree huggers and vegans and earthies!

My office is awesome...

We got rid of all the Styrofoam cups, paper plates, plastic utensils and bought stoneware plates, bowls, glassware, etc. AND we're looking into a building-wide recycling program. Yeah for us!

March 19.

Today I put my sandwich for my lunch at work in a reusable container instead of a bag. Another benefit of this is that my food didn't get smooshed like baby food from traveling on my morning public transportation commute. Yay!

Intro post.

Hi everyone...I wanted to start a community to share the actions I take each day to help the environment and learn new actions from others. Please feel free to post anything related to eco-friendly behavior and please keep postings KIND in manner. I encourage open discussion about anything "green" or environment-related, as long as we all try to respect each other's views. I'm really looking forward to members joining and seeing this community grow.
